Angels & Airwaves 'Love' - Album Review
Love, the third album from Angels & Airwaves, which was appropriately released on Valentine’s Day, sees front man, Tom Delonge, carry on whole heartedly with the project he started in 2005 despite the reformation of his previous band, Blink 182, early last year. After Blink 182 reunited in early 2009 Delonge stated that ‘Angels & Airwaves would never go away’, and he has stayed true to his word regardless of his other commitments such as embarking on a massive US Tour last summer and beginning work on the follow up to Blink’s 2003 platinum selling self titled album. With three albums under their belt it is clear that Angels & Airwaves have established themselves as more than merely a Blink 182 side project, and with each release they have shown that they are progressing in creativity and as a band despite not living up to Delonge’s initial claims that they would ‘change the face of rock and roll’. Stand out songs such as 'Hallucinations' and 'the Flight of Apollo' demonstrate Angels & Airwaves’ musical capability but at the same time elements of Love seem like the band have spent too much time playing Pro Tools and making spaceship noises than concentrating on the quality of some songs.
Despite the album not been the most radio friendly piece of work due to its epic intros and lengthy interludes it must be remembered and respected that this is an entirely independent release. Love is not just the name for the album but also for an accompanying science fiction film the band is set to release later this year and so there is every chance that Angels and Airwaves latest work will be greatly appreciated as a multimedia experience.
Fans of Angels and Airwaves will enjoy this album a great deal as it continues and progresses from the earlier work We Don’t Need to Whisper and I-Empire and much of the album is great to listen to with catchy vocals, big riffs and euphoric harmonics and chimes. Delonge claimed that this album would be the pinnacle of his creativity, and that may be true when experienced with the associated film, but at the moment it looks like his best work may come within the realms of Blink 182 who are planning on releasing album number six at the end of this year.
