Assassin's Creed 2

Although a lot of people thought the original was a complete failure, I think that Assassin's Creed was one of the best original games that Ubisoft ever made; it had an engrossing story, brilliant writing and voice acting and some of the coolest counter-kills ever seen in videogames (especially when using the short blade). Now, the sequel has arrived promising bigger and better things. Modern Warfare 2 managed this, but will the development team be able to produce a game good enough to compete with Infinity Ward's flagship? Well yes, they have...

The story is, again, brilliant, picking up where the first left off, literally. You play Desmond Myles, at least in the real world, an ex-assassain who was kidnapped by Abstergo, a front for the ancient Templars, a group of powerful figures attempting to gain control over the world in order to create their perfect society. By using a machine called the Animus, they could use Desmond to see how his ancestors fought the Templars through and history and where they hid the Piece of Eden, an artifact that can control the minds of anyone who looks upon it. Myles escapes at the beginnig of the game after just realising how far this conspiracy goes with the aid of Lucy, but not before she grabs a disk containing information on one of Myles' ancestors; Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

What follows is Desmonds' journey through Ezios' life in order to train himself to fight like an assassin for the inevitable battle with Abstergo. Ezio and his story is very different from the ancestor of the first game Altair as he was not bred to be a killer. He starts off as a wealthy socialite out for revenge. I won't say anymore on the story apart from the fact that it always gives the player a motive to keep going, there's never really a reason to stop playing which makes a change for a game that is, at least, 20 hours long.

What makes this better than the first is the variety. The big complaint about its predecessor was that it was too linear and you always doing the same thing. Here, you're free to choose when to tackle the story and are given secondary missions to occupy yourself with if you want to make some money. The economy system adds a new level of depth allowing you to accumulate a great deal of florins to spend on weapons, armour and...art (I kid you not). The combat has also been revamped with some enemies requiring more than just a counter kill in order to defeat. Well, that is if you dont use the hidden blades all the time, but using your other weapons is so much more satisfying.

There is so much more I want to say about this game like the fact that although it isn't as impressive as it was with the first game, the free running still holds up today, the accuracy in the creation of the cities, the fact you have so much more interaction with allies, and enemies, than the last and how the ending will leave you begging for more. Unfortunately for you, you'll just have to play the game and find all this out, enjoy!
