After some light planning, a flight was booked, then, after some even lighter planning, my friend Will and I departed for Australia on May 10th 2009, with little but two back packs, and an inordinately small amount of money.

I’ve always preferred using trains to other forms of transport, flying included. So, when the time came for me to do some clichéd travelling around America, I forewent the romanticism of the Greyhound and the comfort of flying for an Amtrak 30-day pass. These offer unlimited travel on any Amtrak services for a month, for $599.

Stockholm

Though ‘cold’ and ‘welcoming’ would be reasonable alternatives, the one word that most accurately describes first impressions of Stockholm is ‘compact’. I use this instead of ‘small’, as the latter carries negative connotations, which are not intended at all. Many cities can be overwhelmingly large to foreign visitors on a short trip, whereas Stockholm’s size dispels fears of trekking for miles to see it’s distinctive areas. Though the city centre spans fourteen islands, they can be easily navigated, either by foot or the excellent T-Bana subway system.
