Kaiser Chiefs, Manchester Academy 1 13/10/08

Kaiser Chiefs made a triumphant return to Manchester as part of an ‘intimate’ UK tour promoting their upcoming third album, Off With Their Heads.
The newly refurbished Manchester Academy played host to the Leeds band and over 2000 of their fans, who heard a mixture of old favourites and new songs at one of a series of ‘small’ shows before the Kaisers return to arenas in early 2009. Chiefs ‘classics’ Oh My God and Everyday I Love You Less and Less inspired mass sing alongs, and songs from the new album, including current single Never Miss A Beat, seemed to go down well.
Frontman Ricky Wilson, renowned for his onstage antics, was unstoppable as ever, at one point even disappearing into the crowd only to crowd-surf back to the stage, losing his belt along the way (don’t worry, it was miraculously returned to him after he claimed he couldn’t sing without it). There was even an appearance by comedian Peter Kay, who watched the show from side stage and talked to the audience while the Chiefs dealt with a technical hitch.
The band came back for an encore with second-album single Everything is Average Nowadays and, unsurprisingly, ended with I Predict a Riot, leaving the crowd with bruises, sore throats and a reminder of why Kaiser Chiefs continue to sell out venues five times the size of the Academy.
