Department Closures Labelled "Knee Jerk Reaction" By MPs

A Group of 14 MPs is to hold an evidence session to grill both the University of Liverpool and LJMU over closures. The hearing has been arranged by a top level commons committee in the light of the planned closure of four areas of study at Liverpool University.
University of Liverpool deputy vice chancellor, Professor Jon Saunders, is being called as a witness to give evidence to the all party innovation, universities, science and skills committee. Professor Michael Brown, vice chancellor of LJMU is also set to be quizzed by the committee after the university axed 33 of its degree programmes.
Phil Willis, the committee’s Liberal Democrat chairman stated : “If it is simply about cutting costs, without looking at the overall offer the university is making, that is a very different agenda that we will want to examine.”
“The decision does seem to be a knee-jerk reaction. Liverpool has come out well in terms of its overall research budget and seems to be taking the opportunity to draw in its horns.”
This latest committee comes after the VC met with Conservative shadow secretary for university and skills Chris Grayling who stated that “There’s every reason for the campaign group to try to engage the university leadership to resolve the situation. The VC of Liverpool University will also be meeting with Labour MP, Louise Ellman today.
Mrs Ellman expressed concern over closures. “This is a major university and these are key departments. The university is a major part of the city’s economy and its future is very important, so I am very concerned,” she said.
The committee will also hear from a panel of students from the universities and is open to members of the public. The session is to be held at 2pm Monday 23rd of March at Liverpool Hope University.
