Internet Addiction
It’s not something you hear about a lot and when you do it’s often accompanied by headline about some person in Eastern Asia who’s caused a death by playing too many online games, whether it be their own death, or someone else’s accidental/purposeful death.
But really, would society be able to cope were the vast network that is the internet go and die? Practically everything is done with some form of internet use such as banking, working, researching and leisure. It allows you to contact the other side of the world within seconds and order your shopping without having to leave the comfort of your home. Should we rely on it so much? After all the concept of the internet is a by-product of machinery, and if there’s one truth in the world, it’s that machines break.
The idea of the internet breaking down was brought up in the South Park episode ‘Over Logging’ where the whole of the USA became a ‘Grapes of Wrath’ type scenario with people travelling across the country and living in squalid camps in the hope of being able to access the internet. It may be an odd choice to help back up my argument, but whether it was intentional or not the writers brought up a valid point. Society has become dependent on this almost bottomless pit of knowledge and information that it’s turned old fashioned ways of doing things almost archaic and obsolete. I highly doubt there is a single journalist in the developed world that has never used the internet to research their work.
I’m not entirely guilt free either. My internet broke over the weekend and without anyone to sort it out for me, I found I had absolutely nothing to do during all those times when I nothing else to do (which is usually spent just mucking about on the internet). It made me think how precious and underappreciated a resource it is. It also made me very thankful I bought an iPhone last summer.
I’m not saying we should cut out the internet completely, my point is just appreciate what you have, don’t get over reliant on it. I don’t know, maybe next time you have an essay to write, why not go down to the library and look in a book instead of using Google or Wikipedia?
