Kid British EP Review

The casual, conversational approach of the indie-mainstream pop/rock with a sandwhich-of-reggae-beats-found-amongst-ska-rythms-group launches their first LP titled Leave London.  Based in Manchester and on the Mercury record label, the band seem to be doing well for themselves, with the collaboration of producer Steve Dubb (previously worked with Chemical Brothers) working on some of their original material and have in the near future, a tour booked with The Enemy nationwide.

‘Elizabeth’, including the catchy:  “O Elizy, o Elizzy...oooo” is a light hearted tune released in October, which includes up-beat, harmonies to cheer the listener up and collective, group singing which has reminiscence of the Kooks.

“She will leave” is a song which uses the quick-witted, causal tone of the band “Tony tells Angela he’s nipping off for a pint...”, leaves a realistic story for the listener to follow. Using your Jamie T-esque “Stella”, the track has the development of a story line which concludes in a catchy “She’s getting off quite shortly”.  Aside from tuning in for a bit of a fable, the track contains little other points of interest, repetitive and includes, of course, a mid eight section featuring the lonely husky vocals.

“Lost in London Town”, however provides an interested and threatened perspective of the artist whilst being in London. The lyrics allow for the listener to relate to in terms of literal pin-points within the city (how else can you get “biscuit” and “district” within the same rhyming couplet?), which provide a quirky insight into the city.  The instrumentation of brass and reggae rhythms provides a tiresome, confused approach along with adding some original spice to the mix.  The standard feelings of being in the city, including; bewilderment, isolation and insignificance is identifiable in the track.

Listen out for them supporting The Enemy in the upcoming tour in this and next month, with dates in Manchester for the 21st and 22nd of March and Liverpool for the 25th March. Go to www.myspace.com/kidbritishmusic for more.
