Scrap Culture Vol. 1

Snippets from the world of music, fashion and pop culture.

The Olsen twins have long been building their fashion reputation with their own clothing line ‘The Row’ and regular appearances on the fashion blog circuit for their enviable personal style. Such a sturdy base allows for many a side project and it’s been released that the twins have teamed up with prestigious sunglasses designer Linda Farrow to produce their own range of eye candy. Big sunglasses and the Olsens go together like Pete Doherty and a trilby so one would presume they have tried and tested enough styles in order to produce some quality products. The range is to go on sale in 2010 and probably won’t be available in UK stores but if you’re desperate to see the world through an Olsen tinted lens no doubt they’ll be less than a click away for next summer.

Lupe Fiasco's highly anticipated third album Lasers (also rumoured to be his last) does not look like it will be set for general release until the end of the year. However, the internet has been spreading a leaked track from the new record which goes by the name of “Fire”. Using a sample from the Jimi Hendrix classic of the same name, this song cites Lupe’s contempt at not being featured on a ‘Hot Rappers List’ put together by MTV. This ambitious use of sampling such a well known song could be Lupe’s way of sticking two fingers up at the broadcasting company and he is no stranger to adding his innovative style to old classics (Daydream feat. Jill Scott used a sample from I Monster - Daydream In Blue). The opening drop immediately catches your attention and the rap fits perfectly with the sample, I have no doubt that this will become popular to the point of being over played but some sections seem to not quite fit (when Lupe raps over the bridge of the original track) and could he have possibly gone too far by using a song by such an iconic musician? Opinions?

Paris fashion week has now drawn to a close, marking the end of fashion week season until next spring which will showcase the 2010 autumn winter/collections. One of the most memorable shows from Paris comes from the constantly awe-inspiring house of Chanel, which is still under the reigns of the intimidating but always innovative Karl Lagerfeld. This particular show took place at the Grand Palais and instead of a typical straight and narrow catwalk, the models walked around layout not too dissimilar from a field, with hay, trees and other such greenery surrounding them. The show also featured an impromptu performance from the new face of Chanel handbags Lily Allen who sang ‘Not fair’ during the catwalk. The collection itself was of course desirable, with the traditional Chanel tweed and quilting alongside more fresh and contemporary styles. With this collection the fashion house took a step away from its usual predominantly black colour palette with many of the pieces produced in white and ivory fabrics, breathing a certain freshness into the collection, perfect for spring and summer.

Friendly Fires have been making tsunami sized waves across the live music scene this past year, with their slick and energetic performances gracing the stages of many a festival and their own highly successful UK tour. If you unfortunately missed out on witnessing one of their amazing shows, it’s been released in this week’s NME that they will be hosting a final all-nighter performance at The Coronet in London on December 11th. So for those of you who fancy a trip down to the Capital tickets are available at nme.com/tickets. The full line up sees live performances from of course Friendly Fires, The Invisibles, Wild Geese and Motor City Drum Ensemble. There will also be DJ sets from the host band alongside Michael Mayer (Kompakt) and Joe Goddard (Hot chip).

Up is the latest offering from animation moguls Pixar. It is their tenth feature length film, released in 3D and tells the story of a grumpy old man named Carl Frederickson and an excitable young boy named Russell who fly to South American by a house tied to a large number of helium balloons. Sounds normal enough? The film has received an overwhelmingly positive public reception and is said to be an endearing and emotional film, not something you would usually expect from a medium that is usually aimed at a young audience. So next time you’re wondering which film to watch on Orange Wednesdays look no further.
