Showcase November 2009

Tickets for this term’s Showcase are now officially on sale! Showcase takes place on November 12th 2009 at Hannah’s Bar, smack bang in the middle of Liverpool Music Week! With a line up jam packed with the best of the local and student music scene, and at a mere £3, these are sure to be some of the hottest tickets in town. Check out each of the bands for a sneak peek at what’s to come.

8:15-8:45 Bagheera

Hotly tipped by the likes of the Guardian and Steve Lamacq, current students at the University are not only setting the Liverpool music scene on fire; soon they’ll be nation-known. The trio met studying Music and officially formed as a band in February earlier this year, and are now known city wide for their haunting three-way harmonies. Check this promising threesome out at their myspace and you can catch them live prior to our event on 23/10 at Bumper and again on 03/11 at Alma de Cuba where they will be supporting Wild Beasts.

9:00-9:30 Picture Book

This three-piece are made up of local talent ‘Master ToKo’ and ‘Lord Highowl’ with vocal splendour provided by ‘Lady Aya’ from the Faroe Islands which according to my googling is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The band are slowly and surely making their mark on the Northwest’s music scene, with a number of gigs besides ours planned for the coming months, and their own club night which takes place on the last Saturday of every month at Magnet. The trio’s next single ‘Make a Move’ is released this coming Monday 26th October, and to celebrate this, the band are looking for 40-50 extras to travel with the band through to Manchester on Saturday 28th November to partake in a public video shoot. Travel to and from Manchester will be covered by the band, and they’ll even be offering free entry and cheap drinks at the official single release party for ‘Make a Move’ that night back in Liverpool, at Magnet. If you are interested or would like to know more please contact Jesse Macnamara on jesse.macnamara@gmail.com or email the band at picturebookmusic@googlemail.com. In the mean time, check out the single, and the band’s other work at their myspace. You can also read our review of the band from earlier this year here.

9:45-10:15 The Harmonics

Student four-piece The Harmonics have enjoyed a near meteoric rise in status within the Liverpool scene since their first gig at The Metropolitan earlier this year. The band is lucky enough to boast of shared rehearsal quarters with Liverpool heavyweights the Rascals and the La’s. It is perhaps in some way thanks to this inspiring habitat that the band’s modern take on the greats which this fair city has spawned goes down so well. Although the band don’t have a myspace, you can give them a listen on youtube, here.

10:30-11:00 Dirtblonde Local duo, Ivan (guitar) and Lula (vocals and bass) are full of raw, punk energy and are perhaps one of Liverpool’s best kept secrets. The band released their debut EP White Noise Rubber Heart in May 2007 through the Filthy Little Angels label, and played the South by Southwest festival in Texas this summer where the local press named Dirtblonde one of the Top 8 “must-see” bands at SXSW alongside such acts as Primal Scream. You can listen to the band at their website and you can catch them at two other dates during Liverpool Music Week: on 04/11 supporting Bombay Bicycle Club @ The Masque and on 10/11 at Mojo.

Now you’ve met the bands, all that’s left to do is buy your tickets! You can buy tickets from The Base in the Guild, or by emailing editor@liverpoolstudentmedia.com. RSVP to the Facebook event here.
